Just when it looked like Siena's five-match win streak would come to a disappointing conclusion at McCann Arena Saturday afternoon, the impossible happened. The Saints staved off three match points, rallying from a 14-11 deficit in the fifth set to post a stunning win over rival Marist 3-2 (25-23, 25-18, 18-25, 21-25 and 17-15).
The Siena volleyball team has been doing a lot of things right the last few weeks. Wednesday night's performance at crosstown rival UAlbany was not one of them. The Danes humbled the Saints 3-0 (25-10, 25-15 and 25-16) in a match televised throughout the Capital Region on Time Warner Cable Sports.
Niagara had won 33 straight matches against MAAC schools entering its showdown with Siena. Combined, the two schools have won the last six MAAC Championships, but for much of this season it appeared they were headed in opposite directions. Not any more. The Saints defeated the Purple Eagles on Monteagle Ridge Saturday, doing so with shocking ease in a 3-0 (25-23, 25-21 and 25-20) sweep that sent chills through the spines of coaches around the league: Siena volleyball is back.
The Siena volleyball team faced a classic trap match Sunday, playing an experienced Canisius squad on Senior Day a day after its biggest league win in years. The result was a 3-0 (26-24, 25-22 and 25-18) setback that ended the Saints' seven-match MAAC win streak, and placed critical importance on the final two matches of the regular-season at home next weekend.
The Siena volleyball team begins a make-or-break weekend Saturday at home against Saint Peter's in the penultimate contest of the regular-season. The Saints enter their final two games in a tie for third with Manhattan in the MAAC standings. It's possible by the end of the weekend, that tie could involve five schools, as Iona, Canisius and Marist are all within a game of the Saints and Lady Jaspers.
If the Siena volleyball team wins its final match of the regular-season at home against Manhattan Sunday, the team will earn the No. 3 seed in next weekend's MAAC Championships. The Saints continued their improbable run from the bottom of the standings with their eighth league win in nine tries Saturday, an easy 3-0 (25-15, 25-16 and 25-13) sweep of winless Saint Peter's.
If the Siena volleyball team loses its final match of the season today at home to Manhattan, it's likely the team's MAAC Tournament will hinge on a peculiar tiebreaker. The Saints can eliminate any doubt with a victory.
The Siena volleyball team is headed to the MAAC Tournament next weekend. The Saints completed their remarkable run to the Championships with an exciting 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-22 and 25-17) victory over Manhattan on the final day of regular-season play.
The Siena volleyball program hasn't won many individual honors this season, but on Monday two of the team's less heralded players got some much-deserved recognition. Setter Sarah Sivertson was named MAAC Player of the Week, and freshman Jacqueline Skeen was selected MAAC Rookie of the Week, after the Saints toppled Saint Peter's and Manhattan to secure a MAAC Tournament bid.
Sophomore Taylor Akana, junior Lesli Akeo, and the Siena Saints were picked sixth in the MAAC preseason poll. After leading the Green and Gold to 11 league wins and a third place finish in the regular season standings, Siena's one-two Hawaiian punch was honored at Friday night's MAAC Tournament banquet with the league's Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year trophies.
Each of Siena's four MAAC Championships under coach Garvey Pierre has had one constant: Wins over Fairfield in MAAC Tournament play. The Saints will look to repeat history this weekend, as the first step to a potential MAAC title is a semifinal matchup with the second-seeded Stags at 4 p.m. at the Yanitelli Center in Jersey City, N.J.
Siena volleyball came into the 2011 MAAC Tournament on fire, but will leave wondering what might have been following Saturday's 3-2 loss to arch-rival Fairfield at the Yanitelli Center in Jersey City, N.J. The Saints won the first set, and put forth a dramatic comeback to capture the third in thrilling fashion, but could not close out the Stags and extend the 2011 season.
Freshman Jacqueline Skeen added another trophy to her mantle Monday afternoon. Following a top-notch first season in Loudonville, the native of White Plains, N.Y., was named to the COBRA Magazine All-Northeast Team as an honorable mention.
Sophomore Peter Collins of men's tennis and Lesli Akeo of volleyball have been selected as the Leo Dufort Student Athletes of the Month, representing October. The two standouts have shined both academically and athletically, and represented Siena extremely well during the fall season.
